i went to a warsaw's club called powiekszenie today, where one could buy some of older designs from few well known polish designers. here grzegorz matlag showed some pieces. i love the asymetric forms; wrinkled, distressed fabrics such as silk, polyester with metallic fibres, wool. in one piece he used silk from a wrap coat that looked familiar like it was from vietnam. lots of hand works and patchworks.

i looked thru tommy ton's street style pictures on style.com and gq.com during milan men fashion week and i was kind of dissapointed. what did i see? socks, shoes, buttons, pocket squares, boutonnieres, tiny somethings worn as boutonnieres, scarfs, all in vivid colours, few fedora hats, few tweeds n checks, and i asked mysefl: is that what the elite of fashion is really wearing? no new fabrics, new shapes and silhouette?

colours and details, come on, isn't it how the italians dress on their regular basic?

then i found sarah mover's article abt aged men always have style (and young men don't) in the telegraph. style here means the above (colours, details and such). then i looked back at pictures from some fashion shows in milan. the "stylish ageing" is nowhere to be found.

thank god!

despite that the milan shows this season are quite boring.

guy trebay from nyt finds these clothes "low key". now you at least have a new meaning. neon orange, yellow, red head to toe is "low key".

what a sad news! tao kurihara, one of rei kawakubo's protege, is closing her own label tao, 6 years after she debiuted in paris (for aw2005). her label has been produced by comme des garcons. she will now focuse on comme's tricot line.

i think my most fav tao collections would be her ss2006 (handkerchiefs) and aw2008.

carine roitfled is no more the paris vogue editor in chief. emmanuelle alt takes the position from her former boss.

waiting forward to seeing the vogue famous editor's next projects (she said she wants to focus on her personal works, but rumors are that she was fired), as well as emmanuelle alt's the first new vogue issue (march vogue if i am not wrong).

meanwhile everybody seems to be supporting emmanuelle alt, exept for karl lagerfeld who said "she has a style, but is it enough to make a whole magazine?". karl lagerfeld also said he likes her personally and we should wait to see her works.

two pictures from my (group) show "streets of memory", hanoi, 15-19.2010.

a quarter of 36 streets of traditional crafts of ancient hanoi has been given a very beautiful name, but not necessarily correct: "the old streets of hanoi". there is the word "old", but the word "hàng" that every street name is beginning with is missing. and they forgot about the word "craft", too. For most of people, including hanoi inhabitants, vietnamese people, as well as foreigners, those "old streets of hanoi" have a romanticised and idealised image. this image is best seen in bui xuan phai's paintings. since then, many artists have copied the famous vietnamese painter's style, mostly with hope to sell their own art works more successfully. at the end, his famous motifs of old houses with curved, tile roofs, young women in traditional ao dai tunics and conical straw hats, have landed in cheap souvenirs sold in shops for western tourists.

perhaps that idealised image of the old hanoi quarter could be seen as the result of hanoians' desire to see their own town as a quiet city of beauty, elegance and purity. in the other hand, this is an official image of the capital, which has been long maintained and popularised by vietnamese authorities. it is treated as a symbol of beauty of hanoi and its people, reaching the status of a symbol that celebrates vietnamese culture and art. at the same time, that status image is commercialised by both the vietnamese government and business, to attract more tourists to the country.

my art works play with that romanticised, idealised and commercialised image of the city.

the art works include portraits shoot in the streets.

the aim of the art works is not to capture the reality of hanoi (it is not a documentation, records of "true" images of the city), or to reconstruct the old images of hanoi. instead, it plays with the common, romantic, sentimental imagination about the city.

i went to a hair show in hanoi last weekend in giang vo exh. center and took few pictures in the backstage for nguoi dep magazine. the show was kind of a freak show (sorry:). blk feather, fake leather, corset, net leggings, transparency top for boys, lot of zippers, studs and safety pins (kinky sex if you will). you name it, you got it.

the good thing is they really made a good, entertaining show. the venue was huge, the models walked in a long runway like 100 m. from a fashion point of view, it was gross, tho. nothing new, but this is what ppl want to see here. and the light "danced" up and down, it was not so kind for photographers:)

it looked like the models had their own shoes on, wtf.
